Earshot: Gregg Belisle-Chi + Trimtab

In Earshot Jazz’s annual Jazz: The Second Century series, six Seattle-area artists present original work in a concert setting. This line-up was selected and programmed by a peer panel of Seattle artists through a “blind jury” process. In response to a call for submissions, more than 30 ensembles submitted projects they felt question and expand the jazz form.

Gregg Belisle-Chi performs solo, and in duos with vocalist Chelsea Crabtree, mining the relationship between composition and improvisation with dark and rich guitar work. His playing is creatively ambiguous: what seems structured is loose and free, what is improvised is focused and informed.

Trimtab was formed in Minneapolis by guitarist Jason Goessl, who enlisted bassist Phil Cali and drummer Brian Oppel when he moved west. Inspired by 20th century architect and theorist R. Bukminster Fuller, the trio uses sound to express the link between architecture and musical form.
