Rich Pellegrin and Neil Welch each share a deep affinity for the topography of the NW. Their artistic practices aim to sonically reflect the terrain. For more than two years, they met on Whidbey Island to record a number of improvised and composed pieces for piano – saxophone duo. This resulted in two albums, ‘Topography‘ and ‘Before – After,’ which each “evoke cool mists hovering just above the treetops in the twilight, the swaying of tall grasses on the bluff top, and the whispers of the reeds in the marsh…all of this beautifully expressed with understated grace” (All About Jazz). Pellegrin and Welch will perform works from these albums.
Evan Captain‘s original music spans his more in-the-box compositions, while venturing into the improvisational realm, and features the rhythm section as soloists throughout. The keyboard elements explore the idea of change, light and dark melodies and textures, call and response. His energetic music is fresh and soulful, created in collaboration with bassist Abbey Blackwell (Rae / Alvvays) and drummer Christopher Icasiano (Bad Luck / Fleet Foxes). This trio will debut two new compositions during the performance – not to be missed!
