Oakland experimental duo Grex joins percussionist Chris Icasiano and bassist/composer John-Carlos Perea for an evening of songs and improvisations. Grex celebrates the release of its new album “Auntie + Tebs,” which explores stories of revolution in the Philippines and South Africa. Icasiano, Perea, and Grex will perform individual sets, convening for ensemble pieces at the end of the program.
Grex has been called an “otherworldly experience” (Eugene Weekly) and “true genre warping music” (KFJC), blending surreal songcraft with the outer reaches of free jazz and electronic music. The band has performed alongside the likes of Fred Frith, Andrew Cyrille, Tony Levin, and members of Irreversible Entanglements, Tune-Yards, and Dirty Projectors. Together with Icasiano and Perea, the band explores new sonic space with multicultural intensity and political fervor.
