35th Seattle Improvised Music Festival #3 CANCELLED

We are very disappointed to report that due to concerns over the COVID-19 coronavirus, we have decided to postpone this year’s Seattle Improvised Music Festival. We hope to make it happen in September, so stay tuned for more info as things solidify. Thank you.

SIMF continues with featured artist Sam Newsome. (NOTE: Opening night is 3/11 at Gallery 1412, closing night is 3/15 at Cafe Racer. Full festival schedule here.)

• Trio: Rebekah Ko (percussion), Leanna Keith (flute), Dick Valentine (flutes, sax)
• Quartet: Galin Hebert (drums), Andrew Jones (bass), Jim Knodle (trumpet), Joe McPhee (sax)
• Featured: Sam Newsome (sax) – solo and/or with others TBA

Tonight’s featured visiting artist is New York-based Sam Newsome, who often works in the medium of solo saxophone using a palette of extended techniques, and using tube extensions that significantly change the timbre of the instrument as well as extends the soprano’s range by an octave or two. Newsome has released seven critically acclaimed solo CDs, and his various honors include a NYFA Fellowship for Music Composition, a New Music USA Grant, and The Alpert/Ragdale Prize in Music Composition. In addition to his solo work, Newsome leads a trio with Hilliard Greene and Reggie Nicholson, is a frequent collaborator with drummer Andrew Cyrille, vocalist Fay Victor, and tours regularly with “Pepperland”, a music and dance work by Mark Morris and Ethan Iverson that pays tribute to The Beatles. He is an associate professor of music at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University.
